Lets be honest, if you are an artist or art lover, you would like to have all possible art material however its not practical. In this article, I am trying to give an overall view of basic art supplies a beginner artist would need to just start with
Paint
- At the beginning, a standard set with limited color will just work fine
- You can buy a basic set of any brand with Red, Yellow, blue, Green, Umber, Black, White, Grey
- Or you can also mix and match with standard colors from different brand & different type (Pan/tube/liquid color etc)
Palettes
- You need to have a palette to arrange your color, play around it, mix it etc
- But most importantly when you will work on a piece & specially wants to have a nice, seamless background color, the need of palette become more
- You should be able to mix the color & have enough quantity ready before painting so that you can paint the whole background at one go else mixing half way will not yield the same color
- I also suggest to use a round palette which can hold the liquid mix rather than a flat one
Brush
- Brush is the magic wand to create wonders.
- It is always wise to spend good amount in a good brand brush, although it costs more than the normal price, it normally lasts very long (approx. 3 years)
- To start with you will just need a medium round brush (Size 4) & flat brush (Size 6 or Size 10)
Paper
- You can start with cold press & 300 gsm paper
- If you are not ready to try on 300gsm paper then atleast start with 180 gsm
- Its also good to start with cotton paper as it holds maximum water.
Container
- While working with watercolor it is important to have atleast two container.
- One container to use clean water for mixing & the other one two clean the brush
Tissue Paper or Towel
- Tissue paper or towel is needed to take off excess water from paper or wiping excess paint off brushes
- Nothing fancy is needed here, just use normal tissue paper at home or an old cloth to its use
